BHSM: Free Training with Anna Vagin, Ph.D

In celebration of BHSM, Communication Works (CW) will be hosting a free training (with free CEUs) for Speech-Language Pathologists on May 20th.

Bit by Bit: The SLP's Guide to Supporting Language & Flexibility in Students with Social Learning Challenges.

Often, students with social learning challenges struggle with flexibility. Their tendencies toward rigidity affect their academic success, friendships, conversational skills, and even how they work in speech and language sessions! In this one-hour introductory presentation, we will review how our use of the Trifecta Toolbox supports greater student flexibility.

We will discuss how to use "double think" to help students extrapolate relevant information and combine it with what they already know, improving their ability to infer and express motives, plans, and desires. We will explore how cool thoughts play such an important role in our ability to deal with our uncomfortable feelings. Finally, we will learn about mental state verbs and their critical role in cognition, narrative discourse, and even attachment. Participants will leave with new skills applicable to group and individual speech and language sessions via both in-person as well as virtual therapy platforms.

Learning objectives:

Will be able to…

…describe a double think activity they can use with a student with whom they work.

…create a visual to support students in practicing cool thoughts.

…explain what mental state verbs are and why they are so important.

…demonstrate how to use an animated video to teach mental state verbs.
