Why Early Intervention

The first three years of life are a critical time for discovery, during which children learn who they are, how to relate to others, how to express their feelings, and how to feel competent. For young children with genetic disorders or other conditions that lead to a high probability of developmental delay, it is recommended that communication intervention begin immediately. Well-implemented programs can brighten a child’s future and lessen the impact a developmental disorder has on the family. It can lead a child to greater independence, enable that child to be included in his or her community, and offer him or her a more productive and fulfilling life.

Communication intervention may begin as early as birth to 3 months for oral-motor or feeding therapy and as early as 4 to 6 months for behavioral techniques, to increase the frequency and variety of vocalizations/gestures for intent. In addition, parents and other caregivers can learn how to turn play time into therapy time.
