What Constitutes A Language Disorder or Language Delay?
Language involves one’s ability to understand (“receptive”) and use (“expressive”) verbal and nonverbal communication. Receptive disorders refer to difficulties understanding or processing language. Expressive disorders include difficulty putting words together, limited vocabulary, or inability to use language in a socially appropriate way. Language disorders generally occur in childhood, but can also be acquired during adulthood, as a result of a traumatic event such as a stroke or head injury.
A language delay is when language fails to develop according to age-expected milestones and when a child is noticeably behind his/her peers in the development of language. A term such as “late talker” might be used for this situation. Sometimes the reason for delay is obvious and other times it is unclear; however, intervention has proved very effective in helping those challenged with delays to catch up.
How Communication Works Can Help
Evaluations of receptive and expressive language include the use of standardized testing or informal observation to identify strengths and weaknesses, as well as to define targets for therapy. Throughout all stages of language development, CW therapy is focused on enhancing the client’s interaction with others to facilitate natural and effective communication. The therapist may use pictures, books, objects, games, or activities to stimulate language development. Our therapists also use play-based therapy when age appropriate, stimulating a child’s language through socialization and play in a nurturing and positive environment. Home practice is also used to facilitate consistency and expedite progress. We have therapists with bilingual capabilities for families and clients who speak Spanish as their primary language.
